What is the skin?

Waterproof, elastic, washable and protective - with all its daily functions, it’s no surprise that our skin needs a bit of TLC to stay looking healthy and youthful. Luckily our moisturizers for the face and body are clinically proven to deliver age-defying hydration to help the skin appear plumper, firmer and less wrinkled.

Get to know your skin

To know how to look after your skin properly, it’s best to know a bit about it. Simply click on each section to find out what it does and how our products can target each area.

Stratum Corneum
DEFINITION
The outermost layer, made from dead skin cells and natural skin oils.

FUNCTION
Helps to lock in moisture and protect the skin.

ADVICE
Use our cleansers and toners for the face and bath & shower gels for the body to sweep away dirt and dead skin cells without stripping the skin.
Epidermis
DEFINITION
The outermost layer of the skin.

FUNCTION
The primary barrier from the weather. Renews cells. Balances moisture levels.

ADVICE
Keep this primary layer hydrated with our age-defying moisturizers to combat the signs of ageing.
Dermis
DEFINITION
The ‘middle‘ layer of the skin, where the water, nerves and connective tissue is hidden.

FUNCTION
Elastin and collagen fibres maintain the structure of your skin. A ‘water reservoir‘ keeps your skin cells plump.

ADVICE
Drink lots of water to keep that water reservoir topped up.
Subcutaneous Tissue
DEFINITION
The deepest layer of the skin, full of fat cells.

FUNCTION
As the place that stores your fat, the hypodermis may not win any awards for popularity, but it has essential functions like keeping you warm and cushioning you from falls.

ADVICE
Exercise boosts circulation and helps use up energy stored in the hypodermis.
Melanocyte
DEFINITION
Cells in the epidermis that create melanin.

FUNCTION
Melanin is the skin's natural protection from the sun. It also changes your skin pigment.

ADVICE
Getting a tan isn’t the way to protect your skin from the sun. Use our Karanja Tree Sunshield SPF30 to protect from UVA/UVB rays.
Sebaceous Gland
DEFINITION
The gland that produces sebum (the skin’s natural oils).

FUNCTION
Sebum helps to hydrate the skin and lock in moisture. Too much and your skin may be shiny, too little and it will feel dry.

ADVICE
Choosing the right cleanser, toner and moisturiser for your skin type will allow you to get the perfect balance.
