What Are Citrus Scents?
Citrus perfumes date back to the 18th century with the creation of the very first Eau de Cologne. They were originally built around citrus fruit oils such as bergamot, mandarin and lemon entwined with aromatic tones like lavender, rosemary and thyme for unrivalled freshness. Citrus scents are also often used as top notes for a variety of fragrances to add a bright, effervescent and optimistic zing – we love that this effect is technically called a ‘smile’. They’re the first to arrive on the scene but quickest to leave, making way for the deeper heart and lingering base notes.
